BT and FON have announced the launch of BT FON, a Wi-fi service that boasts over 500,000 users and over 190,000 hotspots worldwide.
More than three million Bt Total Broadband customers will be invited to join the scheme in which users agree to share a small portion of their broadband connection.
Users who agree to take part in the scheme will open up a separate secure channel on their wireless router, they can then access the connection of any other member.
BT Total Broadband customers will also have access to BT’s premium Openzone service.
BT FON hopes to create a huge community Wi-fi network. The technology for the scheme was developed by BT’s research labs and FON.
