AOL has launched a new version of its successful instant messaging software AIM.

The new version AIM 6.5 offers a variety of new features for the instant messaging software; including a new status feature; improved mobile messaging.

AIM 6.5 also comes with two plugins that let users stream music and play casual games, both were built with Open AIM APIs.

The new software is available free at aim.com.

AOL also intends to add new social networking tools to AIM. AIM profiles will let users share details, as well as sharing photos with AIM photos.

A new personalised homepage is also being launched where users will be able to view updates from their whole buddy network on one page.

The page will be compatible with RSS feeds so they will be able to customise the page with content from services such as Flickr or Youtube.
