NFC technology gets trial in Gothenburg

Swedish firm TeliaSonera and partnering with Västtrafik a provider of public transport services in Sweeden to trial near field commutation ( NFC) technology in Gottenbury, Sweeden.

NFC is a technology similar to Bluetooth that works over small distances.

The NFC service will allow users of public transport to access a variety of information including timetables and traffic information. Travellers will also be able to purchase tickets via SMS by holding their phone up to information boards.

The trial will start in early 2008, a test group comprised of different types of travellers will be assembled. They will then be given phones with NFC technology installed.

The information boards or ‘ smart posters’ will be set up in a variety of locations throughout town.
