January 3, 2008
The WirelessHD consortium has completed the first wireless specification for digital transmission of high definition video and audio signals.
WirelessHD 1.0 operates in the unlicensed 60GHz band, which is available across the world.
The specification is designed to provide a secure and simple way to connect a range of devices including TVs, HD disc players, set-top boxes, camcorders and gaming consoles.
It also includes provisions for universal remote control of all WirelessHD compliant devices.
The release of the specification will allow consumer electronics manufacturers to focus on WirelessHD-based product development.
The WirelessHD consortium is comprised of 40 companies, including Intel, LG, Matsushita, Panasonic, NEC, Samsung, SiBEAM, Sony and Toshiba.
The Motion Picture Association of America is also supporting the technology, and will help to ensure copyright protection during wireless transmission.
