2007 saw shipments of CCMs (compact camera modules) for Ability Enterprise reach 7 million, whilst Altek shipped 4-5 million. The companies, two of Taiwan’s top four makers of digital cameras, are expecting this year to produce camera modules for applications other than mobile phone handsets.
Ability Enterprise predicts its 2008 shipments of CCMs to reach 15-18 million. The company has already received orders from Sony Ericsson, LG Electronics, and other international handset vendors. They have obtained certification for their 2-3 megapixel CCMs, and will also be developing CCMs for laptops, PC monitors, and other devices.
Altek’s current shipments are to Chinese second-tier and white-box handset vendors. It is developing CCMs for use in cars and other vehicles in conjunction with Hua-chuang Automobile Information Technical Center and High Tech Computer (HTC), which will be released in the second half of 2008.
The top three Taiwan based manufacturers of CCMs are currently Largan Precision, Foxconn and Lite-On Technology .
