Pick and mix shortly with Sky Picnic

The picnic product choice from Sky has been feasible for some time, but it appears it is entering the final phases of testing with employees now able to use the system at home.

The initiative behind Picnic is that rather than obliging users to acquire a bundle people can pick and choose which elements of the bundle they require, be that telephone service, broadband or TV.

The TV service is delivered over digital terrestrial television and picnic will use its own devoted set-top box. The intention appears to be that in time that MPEG-4 encoding will be utilized either to support a HD channel or fit more channels into the existing capacity.

The TV component of the service is the focus of scrutiny by Ofcom. The broadband component looks comparatively well advanced and is designed to be a self-install product with a new version of the Netgear DG834GT ADSL modem/router. The version 4 router will come with a CD to direct people through the set-up of the service.
